The first thing to think about when you’re getting ready to apply for college is whether or not you really want to go. This seems like a really obvious thing, but have you really thought about it? Some of you may be uncertain about whether or not you want to go to college – hopefully this will help you to decide.
It seems to be expected nowadays, you graduate high school and you go to college – that’s how life works. But the price of a college degree is going up, and the benefits aren’t. What do you want to do with your life? Is college actually going to help you with that goal.
Going to college is not compulsory. You can get a job without it – and you can get a job that will pay you enough money to live on. There are so many people in the world who never even get to finish high school – approximately 30% of the people in the USA (according to Apple), so don’t forget, you’ll be ahead of them. On the other hand, if you want to become a doctor, or a teacher (for example) you do need to go to college.
Just because your friends are going doesn’t mean you have to. Everyone grows away from some friends after high school and makes new ones, but this will happen even if you go to the same college as each other. 2 girls I was good friends with in high school went to the same college, and they were studying similar subjects (enough to have a few lectures together). They barely see each other anymore now, just because as part of life they made new friends and found other people they got on better with. But don’t fret, if your friends go to college and you don’t then you can still stay friends with each other – Skype and Facebook are great for getting in touch, and you can plan meet-ups with each other every couple of months too.
Sit down and think about these things:
- What do you want to do with your life?
- Where do you want to live?
- What do you want to do?
- Is college necessary to do what you want?
- Do you need to go to college right now?
If you’re not really sure then I suggest taking a gap year, this doesn’t mean you have to spend lots of money travelling, you can get a job somewhere, even in the local supermarket, and just think. Ask your friends who do go to college any questions you come up with, talk to people in the professions you’re interested in about their experiences, and remember: you can go to college later in life if you want to. You don’t have to go straight after leaving high school.
